U.S. and China Strike Deal to Unlock Rare Earth Supply Chain, A Fragile Truce in the Trade War

The United States and China have reached a new understanding to expedite rare earth shipments to the U.S., marking a significant step toward de-escalating ongoing trade tensions. This agreement follows earlier Geneva talks where China pledged to ease non-tariff countermeasures. Rare earth exports had been restricted by China in retaliation for U.S. tariffs, disrupting global supply chains vital to industries like automotive, aerospace, semiconductors, and defense.

The White House confirmed that the framework focuses on implementing the Geneva commitments, especially around critical mineral flows. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that once China resumes shipments, the U.S. will reduce its countermeasures. However, China continues to scrutinize exports to prevent materials from reaching U.S. military use, which slows licensing.

While the deal signals progress, a comprehensive trade agreement remains distant. It also hints at a broader geopolitical shift, with future deals potentially involving India and renewed U.S. openness to Chinese students in exchange for material supplies.
