Radu Hanga, the president of the Bucharest Stock Exchange, sees positive prospects for obtaining emerging market status from the MSCI index provider as well, after the FTSE Russell agency promoted us two years ago.
"We believe that we are getting closer to a possible promotion to emerging market status by MSCI as well, which will mean an international reconfirmation regarding the potential of the capital market in Romania", Radu Hanga told us.
In September, the Romanian capital market completes two years since its promotion to emerging market status, according to the criteria of the FTSE Russell agency.
The BVB president told us: "Two years after the promotion of the Romanian capital market to emerging market status by the global index provider FTSE Russell, the representativeness of Romanian companies in the FTSE Russell indices has grown considerably. We have 13 companies included in these indices today, seven in the FTSE Global Micro Cap indices and six in the FTSE Global All Cap indices, and we expect more companies to follow in the near future. At the same time, we observe positive prospects for obtaining emerging market status from the index provider MSCI – Morgan Stanley Capital International, prospects that appear against the background of the positive evolution of the local capital market in recent years, in general and the achievement of certain parameters relating to capitalization and liquidity by some of the listed companies. We believe that we are getting closer to a possible promotion to emerging market status by MSCI as well, which will mean an international reconfirmation regarding the potential of the capital market in Romania. Looking at the local level, the stock exchange is consolidating its assumed role as the main financing channel for Romanian companies. The increasing number of companies choosing to list on the stock exchange to obtain the necessary financing for their development, the continuous increase in the number of retail investors but also the increasingly complex projects aimed at the development of our capital market and which engages all its stakeholders fully demonstrates the positive trend we are in. "
In total, Romania will have, from September 19, 13 companies included in the FTSE Russell indices dedicated to emerging markets, seven in the FTSE Global Micro Cap indices and six in the FTSE Global All Cap indices.
On December 1, 2022, the Bucharest Stock Exchange will celebrate 140 years since the official opening of the stock exchange, after a period of over 70 years in which only trade exchanges operated in Romania.
