The Romanian government has officially entered into a strategic partnership with SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, to support the development and deployment of a new satellite internet technology.
This collaboration centers around the use of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network to provide high-speed internet access across Romania, particularly targeting underserved and remote regions. Initial testing conducted within the country has confirmed that Starlink satellites can operate without disrupting existing geostationary satellite systems, ensuring compatibility and safe coexistence with traditional infrastructure.
Following these successful trials, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu expressed the government's full support for advancing Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) technologies. As part of this effort, Romania’s communications regulatory authority, ANCOM, has been tasked with reviewing and advocating for updates to international regulations related to Equivalent Power Flux Density (EPFD) standards—key technical parameters that govern satellite emissions.
Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, welcomed the initiative, highlighting the importance of connecting all Romanians to reliable, high-speed internet through cutting-edge satellite solutions.
This initiative marks a major step forward in Romania’s digital transformation and could significantly enhance connectivity in areas where traditional infrastructure is lacking.
